What do you need to establish your own web site? In addition to web hosting, which is the "real estate" for a web site you will also need to purchase a domain name and you will need to create the content of your web site

Domain Name
A domain name includes two components: a top-level domain or TLD such as grassroots and an extension such as .org . In general, .org domain names are used by nonprofit organizations, .com by commercial organizations, and .net by network providers such as Internet Services Providers. (Other extenstions exist to support other types of organizations. For more information see
this information from Webopedia.)

Creating a Web Site
Today anyone can create a web page or an entire site, using a web development application (like Macromedia Dreamweaver or Microsoft FrontPage), another application program such as Microsoft Word (which can save to an HTML file format) or even a basic text editor like Notepad. Your site can include various types of information including text, graphics, and extras like audio, video or Flash presentations. Web templates can give your site a professional look quickly without the need for custom graphic design. (You will have access to several templates with your Grassroots.org hosting account or can use a web template that you get from other provider.) A more experienced web developer will be able to create a custom site for your organization.

For more information on how to create a web site, see these tutorials at the  Web Developer's Virtual Library .

Configuring the Web Site
After you have been approved for web hosting (by submitting proof of your organization's nonprofit status to Grassroots.org ) you will receive additional information by e-mail. This will include information on the site for transfering files to free hosting account. You (or your web developer) will need to connect to this site using your web development program (or an
FTP program) to transfer files from your own computer to our computer. )

If you have any general questions about the free web hosting, send an e-mail to
hosting@grassroots.org .
