I'm seriously considering learning how to do normal maps just for that purpose, but I don't know how Valve did the normal map for her face. Anyone have a clue?
This is returning to an extremely old topic of mine when I first joined this forum (if anyone is curious, it's in the Abortion Clinic). In it, I asked DU if he was going to normal map the body, and he told me that it was largely not going to need it. Obviously, I didn't believe him, but now that I can see her in all her natural glory, I realize that he was quite right and she doesn't need it, but it could certainly help.
chances are Valve created the normal maps from uber high poly character models, and used a plugin from nvidia to get the normal map from that to apply to the lower poly character.
I think the first game that used this technique was Far Cry...it allowed developers to use lower poly models without sacraficing detail..
No, Far Cry was the first game released with normal-mapping (although I think that Secret Service game had it), but I'm pretty sure Doom III started development well before Far Cry. More to the point, according to Hl2: Raising the Bar, Valve actually didn't use a Polybump/Renderbump/etc method, but "the same technique they use in the movies." That was why I was asking. If they had, it would be a simple matter of converting your model to splines, adjusting as necessary and adding more detail, and then converting into a high-poly mesh to be downsampled in Renderbump/Polybump. Although it would be fairly simple, it would be very hard and time-consuming. That's why I was curious about the method Valve used. _________________ Nyarlathotep

Ok, so Im having the expression problem as well. With regards to questions about which versions people have, me, well I have the online and not the retail. o.o;;
While we're talking about expressions. Alyx in my game has her lips and eyes moving. But her eyelids are set standard at half open. So it looks like shes on a sedative and is about to pass out.

DU has said in the past that it's a result of the decompiler he used to acheive the poses for the eyelids.
Particleman is right...at first the eyelids didn't work at all...because un-commenting the eyelid code in the qc would result in her eyes being closed all the time
I thought I fixed it...because I could open and close her eyes in faceposer...but obviously there's still something missing.....so here'e the remaining to do list for the upgrade
1. make sure installer installs to both garrysmod path and HL2 path to make everyone's gmod work
2. make the installer a bit more intelligent, and see if it can automatically detect the steam account folder
3. figure out where the problem is that prevents some people from seeing the expressions
4. adjust body skin tone to better match neck.
5. incorporate fixed .vmts to make skin shinyness...or lack thereof constant through out body, neck and head
6. attempt to get eyelids to function properly
7. look into HL2dm support
I will be working on this through the weekend....and any third party fixes will be properly credited in the update documentation. _________________
Drop me a line if you are still not able to give a download, DU. I will add it along with the originals and provide a link.
Be interesting to see how long it takes to get me cut off at homestead.
NOTE, please do not download from my links if you already have the nude Alyx files, they are the same ones Digital Utopia provided so you are not getting anything new.
i downloaded it today and its doesnt work. alex in the hl2 game just looks normal i mean do i have to start a new game to get it to work or what? please help, and if u could walk me throught getting it to work for the latest gmod version that would be great.
ok...(man...I really need to do something to make the installing easier..lol)
first off, run the installer...
when you get to the section where it shows the install path (by default it will be "C:\Program files\valve\steam\steamapps\") you must click browse! if you installed HL2/Steam in the default location...you will see the folder named with your Steam account name/email. select this! then the files will be installed in the correct path...and it will work in HL2.
now...for garrysmod v8.x...
for some reason garry really screwed things up with this version. although in previous versions gmod would use HL2 models/skins in the same way that HL2 does...as of v8.x...its mostly unpredictable.
for some people (including me) it will work perfectly...for others just the new textures are used...on the original Alyx model...for others...the original Alyx textures will be used on the nude model....and still others won't have it work at all. very sloppy coding by garry IMO...but here's how to make sure it works for you.
go to your /Valve/Steam/Steamapps/<account name>/Half-Life 2/hl2/ folder. In that folder you'll see a folder named "materials" and a folder named "models" copy both of these to the following path.
